And there it is. This is as attractive as I could make the Bourbon Bread Pudding, our designated Tuesdays with Dorie recipe. But just like your mother told you, pretty is as pretty does. This bread pudding is all about inner beauty, or taste. And there it delivers.
What I loved about this bread pudding - and as a die-hard bread pudding lover, I confess that I have been underwhelmed by Dorie's other bread pudding recipes - is that it doesn't knock you over the head. Stale baguette, a simple vanilla-bourbon custard, and a run through the oven - that's it. No embellishments, no (gasp) raisins, no oozy sauces dripping all over the place, no sneaking suspicion that you just consumed a week's worth of saturated fat in one serving. Just a homey dessert that does the trick on yet another snowy, dreary day.
If you like a boozy bourbon pudding, you're going to want to double the tablespoon of bourbon, because it was barely detectable in mine. I still contend that the best bread pudding of all time is Sara Foster's, but hers is more substantial, more sweet, and more "make this once a year as a showstopper dessert" than "make this when you have some stale bread lying around." And isn't that what bread pudding is supposed to be?
Many thanks to Sharon from Simply Southern for choosing this recipe - it seems that not everyone is keen on bread pudding, which is so very puzzling to me. Sharon, on behalf of the bread pudding lovers out there, I salute you!
Next week: Caroline and Claire of Bake With Us chose Chocolate Oatmeal Drops
Last week: Great Grains Muffins
So happy you got to make bread pudding this week because you like it so much! Always a fun time to get to do that. We are not bread pudding lovers over here, so I did a pie rewind that I had skipped before, it is National Pie Month after all, right? Okay, that was the best I could come up with...great job on your bread pudding!
ReplyDeleteIm glad you enjoyed this one! It looks so good!! I like bread pudding!
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow bread pudding lover, I am surprised that this is not more popular with the masses too. I liked it over here and am glad you reminded me about the Sara Foster one....yum. Weirdly enough, we have ten kinds of bourbon in the bar so I can make bread puddings until all the snow thaws!
ReplyDeleteYes, this is the perfect warm-you-up dish on a snowy day! So glad you enjoyed this one! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked it! It's definitely a nice treat on a snowy, dreary day -- especially straight from the oven.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it--I did too! I used rum and doubled it and it was perfect on a snowy, dreary day here too.
ReplyDelete:)
This recipe has been getting good reviews, so I'm sort of regretting sitting out. I'm not generally a bread pudding fan but maybe this is the one to change my mind? :)
ReplyDeleteI skipped this one since we're not big on bread pudding (although Dorie's Four Star Chocolate Bread Pudding was a favorite here). Sounds like it was a hit though.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your loaf of bread...I cringe a little when anyone makes one of my recipes. I know, the reason we post them is so people will make them!)
