We have a bumper crop of deliciousness headed our way this month on Tuesdays with Dorie. To start the month off with a swirl, I present a tiny Cardamom-Espresso Marbled Loaf Cake. This was billed as a Basic Marbled Loaf Cake in the book, but when you have the opportunity to add caffeine to a dessert, you should always take it. That's my opinion, anyway. Carol at The Bake More picked this week's treat, and you can find the recipe on her blog.
At the end of last year, we made Cardamom Crumb Cake - well, I didn't make it during the designated week, but I did rewind it a couple of weeks later and it rocked. So of course when I saw cardamom and coffee as a playing around option for this cake, all thoughts of chocolate and vanilla vanished.
I also decided to make a tiny little loaf cake instead of a giant one by quartering the ingredients. This made the swirling a little dicey, but I prevailed. I used instant espresso instead of instant coffee. The marbling isn't as dramatic or distinct as a chocolate/vanilla version would have been, but the taste made up for it. Coffee. Cardamom. If these ingredients make your heart sing, please try this cake. If you make a teeny tiny one, you and your favorite two-year-old can polish it off together for a mid-morning snack. (We make a good team.)
Next week: Peggy from Pantry Revisited chose Brown Sugar Bundt Cake
Last week: Cornmeal Shortbread Cookies
I love how that combo sounds!! I want to give it a try! I love mini loaves!
ReplyDeleteI just purchased cardamom and used it in another recipe. What a fun flavor. A mini cake is perfect for a mid morning snack!
ReplyDeleteWe're twinkies this week! I used Espresso, too - wasn't this one marvelous? :)
ReplyDeleteYou know, I recently bought some cardamom and have yet to bake with it. I never made that coffee cake, so maybe I will, very soon! Cake looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI love the mini one! This was such a big loaf, even though I used the medium sized pan the recipe called for. I'm not the biggest cardamom fan but I love espresso so that part sounds so good.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely little piece of cake with that pretty teacup! This recipe was easy, delicious, and it is fun to see all the variations.
ReplyDeleteGreat combo. I love imagining your little guy chowing down...what, is he over his great love of the muffin?!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love Cardamom I still went with the basic. NOW I need to make this combo.
ReplyDeleteLove the mini!
I am so intrigued by this variation - I use cardamom so rarely I don't really know what it tastes like, but I know Dorie won't disappoint. Love that you shared the mini with your little guy :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I had my eye on this flavor combo, and until I read your post, I forgot that I was the one who picked the Cardamom Crumb Cake. Duh! I love cardamom, so no wonder this one sounded so good. But the chocolate/vanilla version was good too!
ReplyDeleteI’ve never tasted Cardamon before, but after seeing your mini cake I think I’ll have to give it a whirl. Thanks for baking with me this week. --- Carol
ReplyDeleteDelicious combination! Your loaf cake is beautiful. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so tempted by the cardamom! Love it. Glad to see one with made that version.
ReplyDeleteCiao Jessica ! What about me coming for coffe ? I love your combination!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I am glad you enjoyed this recipe, I did too!
ReplyDeleteLove tiny loaves and photos with teacups! Just always looks like a party to me. Am thinking that cardamom idea may be worth investigating.
ReplyDeleteI've made this recipe (the basic marble loaf) and love it, it's one of my favourites, but I love the idea of cardamom and espresso (sounds quite Swedish, but that might be just me) and I agree that caffeine should be added to everything!
ReplyDeleteI made the same version. Fabulous! I'm out of espresso powder now. Must buy more!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog! Can't wait to browse around. This recipe looks sooo delish!
ReplyDeletexo,
Mini Baker
This looks like a real winner. I know the cake is good but I like what you did with it.
